René Angélil’s Relationship With Destined Partner Celine Dion

With her signature song “My Heart Will Go On,” which has remained a fan favorite for years after its release, Celine Dion’s fame knows no bounds. While the priestess of pop made people fall in love with her music, she fell in love with her manager and long-time acquaintance, René Angélil. Their romance is one of a kind, and for all the Dion fanatics, today’s article is just the perfect spot to get a sneak peek at one of the music industry’s most popular couple’s lives.

Who is René Angélil?

The Canadian singer’s mother is Lebanese, while his father is Syrian. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Angelli also has a younger sibling named André born in 1945.

Angélil’s career began in 1961 when he began performing pop songs in Montreal. He teamed up with boyhood pals Pierre Labelle and Jean Beaulne to form the pop-rock duo Les Baronets. The English-language pop singles from the United States or the United Kingdom that Les Baronets translated into French, include ‘C’est fou, mais c’est tout’ a 1964 translation of The Beatles’ song Hold Me Tight. Following the band’s disbandment in 1972, Angélil started managing artists alongside his closest friend Guy Cloutier.

Along with many other pop singers of the day, they jointly handled the careers of René Simard and Ginette Reno, two successful entertainers from Quebec. In 1981, they split up to become independent managers.

After leaving Ginette, Angélil became Dion’s manager in 1981.

Angélil’s Journey From Manager To Life-partner

René, 38, met the ‘My Heart Will Go On’ singer when she was 12 years old and became her manager. In an interview, Dion fondly reiterated how her singing made Rene break down into tears, and she felt reassured by her talent.

When Celine turned 19, their intensely close professional bond finally transformed into a romantic one. The singer declared her love for René in the sleeve notes of her album “The Colour of My Love” after concealing their relationship for several years. In December 1994, Celine and René exchanged vows at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, the groom’s birthplace.

The 26-year-old singer looked stunning in a silk gown designed by Mirella and Steve Gentile, which included a 20-foot train composed of lace and crystals that should have taken a thousand hours to make.

René’s Heartbreaking Departure

Before his passing in 2016 from throat cancer, the Grammy-winning singer was married to her former manager for 22 years. Dion took time off from her profession to care for Angélil after he received three successive cancer diagnoses.

René overcame his throat cancer diagnosis both in 1999 and 2000, the disease returned in 2013. In 2014, following a throat surgery to remove a malignancy, he was informed that his illness was terminal. On January 14, two years later, he finally lost his prolonged battle with the disease.

Following Angélil’s passing, Dion has dealt with her share of health issues. In December 2022, she disclosed via an emotional Instagram post that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, an uncommon neurological disorder that can result in crippling muscle spasms.
